Local outrage as controversial bus tinkering costs city £10,000

Local bus users have voiced their concerns after it was revealed that a bus consultation, which saw minimal changes, cost over £10,000.

The only outcomes of the costly project have been minor changes to two services. Out of a total of thirteen proposals, eleven were either deferred or dropped, following public outcry.

The revelation follows a Government announcement that investment will be provided to retrofit another five Sheffield buses to run on green fuels.

Cllr Ian Auckland, Sheffield Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Transport, said:

“Liberal Democrat are committed to building a stronger economy and a fairer society, so I’m delighted that in Government we have delivered yet more investment for green buses in Sheffield.

“This contrasts to our local bus ‘partnership’, which is clearly nothing more than a smokescreen for big bus companies getting their way.

“Their latest round of proposals was met with near universal criticism from bus users, like the illogical changes proposed to 17, 20 and 20a in my community. As a result, we’ve seen only minimal changes from this exercise and the city has been left with a £10,000 bill. Local residents deserve a better service.”
